Prof Augustine Nwoye is currently Professor Emeritus of Psychology in the School of Social Sciences of the University of KwaZulu-Natal and a Part-time Professor in the Department of Clinical Psychology of the School of Medicine at Sefako Makgatho University of Health Sciences, both in South Africa.
Prof Nwoye has won several Visiting Fellowships and given Public Lectures in many universities in continental Africa, Asia, Europe, and North America, including the Universities of Cambridge and Suffolk (England); Ohio State, Howard, Akron, Temple, and College of the Holy Cross (USA); Toronto and Calgary (Canada); Stockholm (Sweden); and Universiti Sains Malaysia (Malaysia).
Professor Nwoye has been an Associate Editor of the Psychotherapy and Politics International (PPI) since 2012; Consulting Editor, Review of General Psychology (RGP) since 2020; and a member of the Executive Board of the International Family Therapy Association (IFTA) from 1999-2005.
A study of Professor Nwoye’s new book: African Psychology: The Emergence of a Tradition published by the Oxford University Press in 2022, shows that Prof Nwoye has developed an African paradigm for mental health and, in particular, for family and couple therapy. His 2015 Fulbright scholarship was spent at the College of the Holy Cross and Howard University in the United States
