The WFMH World Congress at the First World Capital of Mental Health: Barcelos Portugal

Welcome to Barcelos!

Anti-stigma can be most effective when comprehensive collaboration involves administrative authorities. In 2023, the WFMH initiated the “World Capital of Mental Health” Project, an idea conceived by Ingrid Daniels to foster such collaborations.

The Municipality of Barcelos, Portugal, presented elaborate action plans endorsed by the administrative budget, and was chosen as the first World Capital of Mental Health. Action plans include admission or resting facilities, healthcare, advocacy, housing, support to family, employment, education, and other socio-occupational, cultural, and/or personal enhancement programs. In addition to the global reports at the symposium, workshop, and other sessions, participants could learn about these action plans in Barcelos.

Barcelos is a tourist attraction. Barcelos is a pilgrimage site, the cradle of the Rooster of Barcelos (Galo de Barcelos), the Portuguese emblem and symbol of good faith and justice, and is designated as a UNESCO Creative City in the Crafts and Folk Arts. Please join the WFMH World Congress in Barcelos and learn how to help your city become a future candidate for the World Capital of Mental Health.
